Planning your Kitchen

Are your ready for a change? When taking on the endeavor to update or remodel your kitchen there is plenty to consider. Space planning and making you kitchen function efficiently is more than just appearance.

One of the first steps is to look at is your current kitchen layout and determine if the locations of your appliances and cabinet configurations need to be change to create a more efficient space. Don't worry we are here to help you figure that out! However keep in mind moving electric or plumbing components could get costly. But if you are starting from scratch, you might as well get what you want! Start off by compiling a list of pro's and con's of your current space to help you narrow in on what you want!
Think of the Triangle! In kitchen design there is something called the "Work Triangle, which is the distance between the three integral parts of your kitchen. The stove, sink and refrigerator complete the triangle, and all three should be close to one and another, but not so close that you feel cramped while using the space.

When think of moving your space around, also take into account your counter space surrounding your appliances. Having adequate "landing space" next to the stove or microwave for instance will give you an area for food prep, placing ingredients and so on right next to you while you work. Minimum space required is 15", but if you have room we would recommend stretching that out! The sink area also requires some room, 24" minimum on one side and 18" on the opposite.

Other than counter space, think of flow. Traffic flow relates to the work space and the walkway space. The work space is the major areas where food prep occurs and should be apart of your triangle. You need to allow for at least 42", which gives you enough space to easily open and close cabinets and access what is inside of them. The walkway is different and is a path through the kitchen to reach other parts of the home. The walkway space should not cut through the work space. The minimum width for the walkway space is 36".

Before you begin planning for your remodel, measure! Measure the footprint of your kitchen and include the dimensions of the wall height, length, windows, doors and their swing etc. Also included any additional space if you plan to expand. Sketch out the layout so that you can see the big picture. Need help? Download our Measure Guide! It would be devastating to remodel your kitchen that would look gorgeous, but has no more functionality than your original space.
