The Finishing Touches

Creating the Finishing Touches

When trying to accomplish a certain style in your space, there are many elements to consider. Accessories are a great way to pull together the finishing touches in your home. Here are some important elements that make the biggest impact to your room.

Lighting
Lighting is a great way to add focal points to your space. Adding a unique piece to create contrast or an understated piece as a way to soften a room. Lighting has a lot on impact of how a room ties together. To blend things select lighting in a finish that relates to other items or finishes in the room. Matching the wood or other decorative hardware in the room will create a sense of consistency and temperature. For instance, if oil rubbed bronze is selected it would add a feeling of warmth, or for cooler tones select satin nickel or chrome. If you are shooting for a contrast select a unique finish that will stand out and be different from the surrounding colors. If your colors are predominately oil rubbed bronze select a pop of copper. This will accent the undertones of the oil rubbed bronze, nicely and create a visual point. It is a good idea to accent your contrasting finish with a few well placed items that are in a similar finish. This will tie the room together as a whole.

Artwork and Décor

To create a complete space adding some well placed artwork or decor items in the selected color scheme you have will finish the room nicely. Now you do not have to find artwork only in the colors you have on display. With the same rule as lighting, you can create a contrast by hanging a contrasting image. To tie in your image, add details and decor items that will help tie in your selection.

For instance, you feel in love with a picture of a horse that is outside your color scheme. But by adding a figurine on an end table or a throw pillow that may replicate the colors or theme will make your contrast flow.

Soft Items

The soft items would be a area rug, pillows or towels you have that may be decorative or not. Having some well placed rugs in key focal areas will definitely add a sense of style and flow to a room. For instance having a rug at your entry or kitchen sink are areas that guests see more. Why? Usually these area are well light by the windows or door ways. A larger area rug is also a great way to add color to a room and can tie color schemes from other rooms to a specific room. Rugs, towels and pillows are all great ways to add texture, patterns and colors to a room. In the end, it is all about the details that will make your home feel whole and complete.
