Don't forget the Laundry Room

Along with your kitchen and bathrooms, the laundry room is one of the most used rooms in your home. However, unlike the other rooms that are more visited by guests, laundry rooms are more commonly forgotten in terms of design. The main features are a washer, dryer, a sink and are often just placed in the space with a wire shelf placed above. A simple placement, but it may not accommodate your needs. Over the years this room has been getting more attention, and it needs it!!
Note the Items
When creating or remodeling your laundry room there are a few things to consider. One of the most important factors to consider is the intended functions of this room should be. In addition to the primary function of washing and drying, do you need a space to fold? An area for cleaning supplies? A place to iron? How about to hang clothes? Also think of a utility sink, which is great for heavy cleaning. Once you have a note of all the items you wish to use and store in your space, you can begin creating an efficient layout. Make the most used areas closer to your appliances for convenience and vise versa with the rarely used items.
Materials
Once you have considered the items you wish to use, it is important to decide what material you prefer to use in your space. You will need a durable counter-top that will withstand chemicals, water spills, and abuse. Your cabinets should be considered in the same way. In a space that often times accumulates heat and moisture, consider a dense heavy wood or HDF product that will be more resilient. Think of this while you selecting your flooring, paint and back-splashes. Usually laundry rooms are smaller which allows, you more freedom to make selections without breaking the bank!

All in the Space

Now that you have considered your items and material think of your overall space. What kind of laundry room space do you have? Over sized or small? With smaller spaces, consider condensing your space by using stack-able appliances. This will open some floor space and offer room for storage. Also utilize the wall space above the appliances for shelving and wall cabinets. If you are on the other spectrum with a large laundry room and all your necessities fit, consider using the extra room for storage for large clothing items like snow-pants, boots and more. If your laundry room is near an entry door, a command center may be useful to keep everyone on track with a calendar and notes.
