Questions to ask before a Remodel

What to ask yourself before starting a remodel project!
Before you begin a remodel, we have some questions that we would like you to ask yourself! With so many facets involved in a remodel, consider these questions carefully before hand so that you can ensure you are getting what you have envisioned.

How do you use your space?

For example your Kitchen. No one you hire will know exactly how you wish to use your kitchen, unless you tell them. Kitchens are used so differently in other homes. Have you ever visited your family members homes and get instantly confused why they put their glasses where they do? Before your come up with the blueprint of your space, you will need your space to reflect your lifestyle. Kitchens are not just for cooking, they are storage, display and function. Think of where you wish to have your appliances in relation to your oven. Or where your dishwasher is located compared to where your dinnerware is stored. It is highly important to clearly specify what you would like to use the kitchen for in order to plan effectively!

Do I have space for what I need and want?
The footprint of your space is a major factor to consider before designing. Every inch has to be accounted for when adding features like a kitchen island or additional sinks. If your space is smaller can you knock down walls to add to the overall square footage? If not what would you be able to live without to make your other needs happen?

How much would I like to spend?

By far the most critical question you need to address is establishing a project budget. Cabinet door profiles, hardware selections, finish options, cabinet storage accessories and more can affect your budget greatly. Also think of other purchases such as flooring, backsplashes and appliances before coming up with your budget. With all these factors, do a little research to create a realistic budget form the beginning. Or come up with a plan that can be broken into phases to accommodate your personal goals, such as purchase or upgrade the flooring or appliances at a later stage.

How much stuff do I have to store?

Storage needs to be clearly addressed for the items you have. Create a list of the stock items you have and that need a home. Extra dinning dishes or slow cookers need a space to be properly stored. Also think of your counter top appliances such as your toaster, juicer, small toaster oven. Consider if you would like to create a space to hide them when they are not in use. Make sure you thought of your items before a renovation to ensure they all have a spot!

Want to see the outdoors?

Is it important for you to see outdoors? Do you need a kitchen window perhaps? Consider your windows and doors to either maximize your view or eliminate them if that is not necessary. With windows or patio doors more light will make your space appear brighter and larger.

How does your space connect with other rooms?

This question will rely on how you wish to use your space. Today most people want an open floor plan where the kitchen is connected to either the dinning room or living room. This layout makes entertaining a breeze, as guests can engage with each other from other spaces without any obstructions like a walls. However some homeowners may want their kitchen hidden from the main areas, especially if they wish to keep the kitchen away from guests. What is important to you? Also think of the walkways connecting the main rooms. Account for a good amount of space for people to pass each other.

What do I like or hate about my space?

Consider both, what you like and hate about your space, and compile a list! With this list you can begin to determine what you need or want to improve in your space. It is important you know this before planning the new space, this way we incorporate what you envision into the grand plan!

Also if you have a family or spouse, make sure to consider their input as well.
